I’m inspired by objects, landscapes and people that have been forgotten or ignored: women truckers standing by their rigs, a plastic bottle washed up on a beach, worn and mottled like a barnacle, or concrete bus shelters: abandoned architecture of the everyday world. There is cultural revelation in the marginalized, as well as pure pictorial pleasure: color, line and form. In my portraits, I’m intrigued by the off-centered and the unexpected, especially in the contours of the face or the repose of the body when photographed in situ or in the studio. I try to capture the unguarded, almost cinematic moments of my subjects. In my landscape work, I’m compelled by the natural sublime: transcendent mountains, deserts and sea. I’m equally drawn to the built sublime: forlorn gas stations, the contours of the city, architecture in all its forms. As a result I’m interested in the relationship between the two: the shifting boundaries between the natural world and the human mark on it. My images are rooted in a specific reality, with unique stories to tell, but they are also about more complex issues such as human dignity, or consumerism. They are visual archives, topologies of the overlooked: hotel workers, people selling the wares on the beach, eighteen wheelers parked overnight in concrete lots, or forlorn burger restaurants that look like relics from a previous age. These are laconic images, both celebratory and detached, and speak to the larger interconnections between people, place and things.

The idea for an outlet to offer my photography as large scale limited edition fine art prints on the best quality archival paper has been brewing for a while.  I have always loved the making part of photography, going on location and creating images.

For the past thirty years I have been living off assignment photography working with many of the best magazines and companies. Now it is time to show my personal work which I have always produced and not shown so much.
I am offering a selection of my photographic images from my archive available for you and your spaces as fine art limited edition prints.

Most of this work is selected from a series of images around one subject. The work I am presenting is mostly photographed on film and takes a process to create the images.
To give you and idea of my process; I come up with a concept and start researching for instance the architecture in Columbus Indiana.  Then I cast, scout and prepare for the shoot.  Then post production happens and the film goes to the lab in New York for processing and scanning.  The film gets edited and the most successful image gets made into a print.
So as you can see the process is detailed and time consuming.  I love the whole process and have done since I was a young boy of 13 printing black and white in my bathroom in our home or at the local darkroom in Norwich, Norfolk, England.

Drawing, painting and filmmaking all feed my artistic process. I continue to make art in mixed media and keep a continuous sketchbook as a diary, acting as a place to explore and work on ideas.

My work over the years is influenced by a number of the great photographic artists, to name a few: Hiroshi Sugimoto, Paul Strand, Jeff Wall, Robert Adams, Ed Ruscha, Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, Edward Weston, Andreas Gursky, Walker Evans, Sally Mann, Joel Sternfeld, Irving Penn, William Eggleston, Nan Goldin, Bernd & Hilla Becher and Robert Frank. I feel that having closely studied the diverse and compelling works of these remarkable artists has subtly yet significantly shaped my own artistic narrative and perspective. Each of their unique approaches and styles resonates within my creative process, enriching my understanding and expression of the world through art.

The prints I am offering are large scale on the long side fifty inches, the smallest being twenty inches.  The reason for this size is visual impact and detail.  Once the negative is enlarged that big the visual field changes.  Details become narratives within the larger picture which touch emotions and captivate the viewer who can connect their own story.

I have looked at the world as pictures for so long. I have a hyper sensitivity towards what I am seeing, the light, shadow and sense of seeing our planet in my own unique way.
My prints offer a glimpse of how I see the world.  I hope you will consider joining me on this journey and experience a large scale print in your home or business.

Thank You

Patrick
